architect and structural engineering?

what differs the two above? i would like to know the difference. structural engineering is a part of civil engineering. i dont know whether to decide to study civil engineering or architecture.

Answers:

1Good base of answers above, and all are pretty much correct. An architect will determine how a building looks, feels, and functions to the satisfaction of the owner. A structural engineer will determine what is required to resist the forces of nature (gravity, wind, seismic, etc.) so as to ensure the building can be safely occupied to the satisfaction of the architect. Notice the chain of command...

Architects must pass a very intense testing program to become licensed in their state. Engineers must first pass an FE exam (8 hours) usually after graduation, then get through four years of experience, then pass another 8 hour test to become licensed in their state.

Structural engineering is basically a branch of civil engineering; however, I have found that many civil engineers who end up doing engineering in architecture lack the ability to understand the needs of architecture. Enter the architectural engineer. We are trained in the all of the essentials of engineering, but we also take courses in architecture to ensure some understanding of that side of building construction. We are here to design a building, but lets not forget that the whole point is for it to look good.

I was in the same predicament as you when I graduated high school. I liked physics and math and buildings. If you have an interest in buildings and construction and you have a technical background as well, you should consider architectural engineering. If your technical background is not so strong and you have more creativity, stick with architecture. Either way, be sure to find an ABET accredited program otherwise, the licensing process becomes much more difficult.
